NAPLES, Fla. — As demand for skilled construction professionals continues to grow across Southwest Florida, Diamond Custom Homes is helping strengthen the region's workforce by welcoming four student interns from The Immokalee Foundation for a hands-on summer internship program focused on luxury homebuilding.
The four-week internship is providing students with practical experience alongside Diamond Custom Homes' architects, interior designers, project managers and construction professionals. Through the program, interns gain firsthand exposure to careers in construction, construction management, architecture and interior design while working on active luxury residential projects throughout Southwest Florida.
Each student is completing a 120-hour paid internship as part of The Immokalee Foundation's Career Pathways Program, an initiative that connects students with leading employers through structured workplace experiences designed to prepare them for long-term careers. Before beginning their internships, participants completed an intensive workforce readiness program and earned Florida Gulf Coast University's Fundamentals of Workforce Readiness micro-credential and digital badge.
Rather than serving in observational roles, the interns are integrated into daily operations. Each student begins the program working alongside a professional whose expertise aligns with the student's career interests before rotating through multiple departments and construction sites. The experience offers exposure to every stage of the custom homebuilding process, from architectural planning and interior design to project management and field operations.
"Southwest Florida's future depends on developing the next generation of skilled professionals," said Mike Diamond, founder of Diamond Custom Homes. "These students have invested years preparing for this opportunity through The Immokalee Foundation. They've demonstrated the work ethic, discipline and commitment to succeed, and we're proud to help them explore the many career opportunities available within our industry."
The internship program reflects a broader effort to address workforce development in Southwest Florida's growing construction sector. The Immokalee Foundation prepares students for careers through four educational pathways: Business Management & Entrepreneurship, Healthcare, Education & Human Services, and Engineering & Construction Management.
Since its founding in 1991, the nonprofit organization has served more than 18,000 students, with 95% of program alumni working in their chosen fields, according to the foundation.
Diamond Custom Homes is supporting the internships through a financial contribution to The Immokalee Foundation, which covers student wages, professional attire and transportation throughout the program. The funding is intended to remove financial barriers and allow students to focus on gaining valuable industry experience.
"Hosting interns is one of the most meaningful investments a Southwest Florida business can make in our region's workforce," Diamond said. "We're excited to mentor these talented young people while also learning from the fresh perspectives they bring to our team."
